When To Cut Pampas Grass
The best time to cut is when the plumes are nice and full.
When to cut pampas grass. We cut ours in the late fall and it was great timing. In addition the removal of dead foliage allows light to enter the interior portions of the plant to encourage new growth. Measure any vase you will be using.
Still many cultivars are cold-hardy and can survive in climates lower than USDA zone 8. When the pampas grass fills the pot either divide the clump or transition the plant to a larger pot. Most leaves will fade away due to freezing temperature so one just needs to cut them back.
Every once in a while clumps of pampas grass form smaller clumps off to the side. Because of its large size its best to choose a large container with plenty of room for growth. You may want to vary the length to make it easier to decorate with but I would recommend cutting them long so you can have flexibility later.
The thick stalks of the cut pampas grass run full of water in winter. The inside of the stem of the pampas grass is hollow. Make sure that the air can circulate around it so that it can dry out fully.
This is when the plumes and leaves are going to be open giving you that feathery flowers-like look. Though it can grow to be quite large pampas grass can be kept in containers especially the dwarf varieties. It is best to cut pampas grass in late summer early autumn before the winter weather has blown about the grass too much.
Once established pampas grass care is minimal requiring little maintenance other than watering in extreme drought. The reason for pruning at this time is to limit potential cutting back of new pampas grass shoots. But for place where the winters are mild a hard pruning before spring will do the needful.
